What age is it safe to start lifting weights?
March 7, 2009 Is It Safe For My Child to Lift Weights Strength Training The majority of coaching, fitness and teaching books recommend young kids stay away from weights and concentrate on strength training with their own body weight. The dominant concern is that lifting weights will damage growth plates in developing bones. Research has proven that weight loaded activities actually help bones develop by stimulating osteoblasts which eventually lay down more calcium for thicker, more rigid bones. It is repetitive high impact forces that can damage bone. Weight loaded activity helps and is safe. I also see that many young kids cannot handle their own body weight. If a younger player weighs 90 lbs, is it safe for them to do body weight exercises with 90 lbs but not 15 lb dumbbells? Most kids need to use free weights and strength tubing so they can select a load they can handle with good technique. All kids mature at different rates.
