The dominant concern is that lifting weights will damage growth plates in developing bones. Research has proven that weight loaded activities actually help bones develop by stimulating osteoblasts which eventually lay down more calcium for thicker, more rigid bones. It is repetitive high impact forces that can damage bone. Weight loaded activity helps and is safe. I also see that many young kids cannot handle their own body weight.
