What age group is the virginia andrews book flowers in the attic aimed at?
According to a book I have on the greatest 100 young adult writers of all time, Virginia Andrews actually intended the novel to be for older, retired females. However, after it was released, her publisher soon found that it was just as popular with teenage girls. Subsequent books were written with this in mind, however, there are some very mature and disturbing themes in the Flowers in the Attic. Incest (first the parents, then their children) and in the sequel pedophilia when 15 year old Cathy begins a sexual relationship with her guardian. The Heaven series was (slightly) less disturbing. Virginia Andrews died in 1986, when the Heaven series was partially complete. She left behind a partial outline. Her family worked with another author, Andrew Neiderman to finish the series. The Virginia C Andrews trust was then set up to write books based upon the ‘genius’ of Andrews. These novels were more simplistic in form and were aimed at young adults.
