what age do children learn their grammar & writing skills?
Children begin learning language and literacy skills (reading, writing, speaking, and listening) from the moment they are born. Literacy skills are based on the ability to use performed (spoken or signed) language, so the ability to speak and listen is the foundation for learning to write. The amazing thing is that by the age of three, most children are able to use all the grammatical constructions in their native language–they are able to understand other people who use them and they are able to construct sentences that use the various tenses and so forth. In that sense, three year olds have complete grammar skills. Writing skills can be learned very early if a child has a lot of support. Children can learn to write the way they learn to speak–by approximating. Very young children will often hand an adult a piece of paper with scribbles on it and claim it is a story or a shopping list.
