What affect does divorce have on kids?
It really depends on the parents. Parents that are still at least cordial with each other, that are CONSISTENT about what they teach and expect of their children, and do not COMPETE for the children’s affection can still end up with good results. Unfortunately, what frequently happens is that the parent who has the most custody turns into the “do your homework” parent while the less-custody parents turns into the “let’s party since I rarely see you” parent, and the child gets confusing messages about things like work ethic and love. Divorced parenting (if you want to be successful in raising well-adjusted kids) might actually require MUCH MORE maturity than raising them while still married. You need to start by having some serious conversations with your husband and your in-laws, perhaps with all three at the same time. Do it while the kids are over at friend’s house or maybe even purposely hire a sitter just for the occasion. It will be difficult to do, but you will need to make sure
