What advantages does USB provide over the serial port?
Though some users report significant performance improvements when using USB, there is generally no major advantage over a serial connection, assuming the PC is properly configured with no serial port IRQ conflicts or other odd problems caused by other devices such as internal modems, Palm-pilots, etc. USB has the main advantages of convenience and easy installation. In the real world many systems have serial port setup problems and the USB port on the PC usually just works, right out of the box (as long as you have Windows 98).
