What advantage does the Giga Unit Transplant System (GUTS) machine have over traditional hand-transplanting methods?
Although hand-transplanting is still a useful method for small areas, larger projects can benefit from mechanical approaches. Our GUTS machine is able to transplant larger units (20 sq. ft.), thus making the planting unit stronger and minimizing mortality as these larger units contain sediment and organisms from the donor site. GUTS is so successful because it provides the ability to extract many contiguous short shoots without severing the growing tip (apical meristem). GUTS also has the capacity to move the transplants farther from shore and plant them farther apart. Finally, the transplanting cost is substantially reduced because it’s faster and safer.
