Mao consolidated the food production, trade, and transportation systems of China, and eliminated almost all internal political divisions (along with many hereditary rulers and aristocrats). This allowed the country to benefit from its power of production and further expand its industrial base, without competition from either within China or from other nations. Although credited with establishing China as a stable, industrialized, unified state, Mao only did so by imposing complete cultural and political control over China’s citizens.
