What actually happened at the end of Pans Labyrinth?
It’s left up to the viewer’s discretion to decide what happens to Ofelia. Ofelia runs away, taking her baby brother with her, and runs into the labyrinth. Her father follows her, and levels a gun at her. She then hands over her baby brother so that he won’t be hurt, and her stepfather, the captain, promptly shoots her. As she lies dying, we see a scene materialize onscreen. In the scene, Ofelia is standing in the middle of a huge throne room. There, she is welcomed by Pan, who appears to be some sort of jester to the majesties that keep court there. The royalty tells her that she has proved herself to be worthy, by sacrificing herself to save an innocent (her baby brother). They welcome her as one of their own. The point of the ending is that it is ambiguous. We don’t know if Ofelia has actually been accepted into this strange, fantastical family that lives in an alternate world, or if this entire last scene is a fantasy she concocts in order to distance herself from the horrors of wha
