hmm, this sounds like an essay question. I love history (particularly ww2, but also ww1) so i’ll help you out. During the opening days of the war, there was a rush in France to join the French army. Past generations had had their war, and lost, so they were eager to fight and plung straight into berlin, and protect the border. To add to that, other countries, including Germany, felt the same Patriotism. Basically this led to sides throwing all these men into one are and fighting it out until all were gone. Both sides then started losing some patriotism and eagerness to fight, leading to a standstill, until a fresh group of soldiers, Americans, who were both patriotic and had vast amounts of replacements, joined.
