What action is the rest of the world taking to control BJD?
During the past decade both the International Dairy Federation and the World Organisation for Animal Health (Office International des Epizooties or OIE) have reviewed the JD situation with a view to achieving more consistent approaches to the management of Johne’s disease. In the past five years, two large collaborative research programs have commenced in the USA and the European Community with government funding. The Netherlands and several states in the USA have had control programs operating in dairy herds for several years, while Sweden has eradicated BJD and Japan is undertaking an eradication program. France has on-farm control programs in place. The USA also has national standards for assurance and control programs overseen by USDA.
