What accommodations can be made for gifted an talented students?
Gifted and talented do not receive accommodations, unless they had a disability in addition to being gifted and talented. They are two separate programs. Special education is only for k-12 students who have cognitive, physical, or emotional disabilities (and possibly multiple categories) as is legally defined under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act. A school does not have to have a gifted or talented program on it’s premisis. But it IS federally mandated to have a special education program. This is because Special Education is a federal civil rights law. Public schools cannot turn away a student from enrollment/education regardless of the severity/type of their disability.
