What accent is the play spring awakening in?
Do it in your own accent. Spring Awakening doesn’t rely on sounding German, in the way that say Death of A Salesman relies on sounding American. If the content of the play is universal, you don’t always gain something from doing it in the ‘native accent’ – in those cases it’s up to the director and the production what to do, but you don’t have either of those to back you up here. And if all you’re doing is an extract, you can do better work by trying to find the truth in what you’re saying, rather than adding an extra falsehood of an accent. If questioned, you’re imagining it to be part of a production set in America/England/wherever you are! Having said that, you know who’ll be assessing you better than we do. If they’re a jobsworth or have a set mark scheme they have to work with, you may get a few more marks for attempting an accent. But do the least, smallest possible trace of an accent.
