What 3D modeling systems does OpenGVS support?
For traditional 3D modeling, OpenGVS supports 3D Studio ASCII, MultiGen-Paradigm OpenFlight, and Wavefront OBJ file formats. The model hierarchy, texture mapping, and material mapping are all preserved. A common problem with animation file formats is that they a) typically have too many polygons and b) are missing some features we rely upon in realtime animation. OpenGVS now includes a formatter which converts files to the MultiGen-Paradigm OpenFlight format. Modelers like Wavefront, Alias, Softimage, and 3D Studio MAX are best used today for animation (non-realtime) applications. Images rendered by these systems typically take hours to generate. In realtime, images must be rendered at 15 to 60 times per second. This isn’t to say you cannot use these systems for realtime application development, it is just that that was not what they were designed for. However, they are starting to support OpenFlight and low-polygon modeling as well. Still, for realtime 3D modeling, your best choice is
