Were you one of those, who after JFK said Ich bin ein Berliner?
It’s an even less well known fact that Kennedy’s German was completely correct, and the jam doughnut story was invented by someone who may have just about scraped German O-level. ‘Ich bin ein Berliner’ means ‘I am one with the people of Berlin’ which was exactly what Kennedy wanted to say. It is true that there is a small cake called a Berliner (though not in Berlin, mind) but a German would no more think someone was being described as a cake than my old boss would think someone was describing him as a newspaper if they called him an Australian.
