Were you a fan of M. Shyamalan’s prior to filming The Last Airbender?
Jackson: Oh, definitely. M. Night is one of those directors that I wait as patiently as possible for his next film to come out. When I found out he’d be adapting The Last Airbender from the anime series, I was extremely stoked because I was a really big fan of the series. Dev: My two favorite films of his are The Sixth Sense and Unbreakable. I’m a big fan of Samuel L. Jackson as well. How familiar were you with the original series? Jackson: I’ve seen the original series many times. I tried to study it a little bit, but we wanted to bring our own flavor to the characters. We definitely matured [Soka] a lot, there’s not as much slapstick as there is in the animated series. We’re condensing 24 half-hour episodes into a less than two hour film. You gotta pull some punches here and there. But yeah, I was well aware of it, and I got many kudos from my friends once I landed the role. Dev: I watched the first season.
