There were no Marine ground combat troops in Europe in WWII. The Fourth Regiment of Marines briefly was stationed in Iceland in 1941, before Pearl Harbor, pursuant to an agreement between Chruchill and Roosevelt, thus freeing a Brigade of British troops, which had been rushed there after the Nazis occupied Denmark, for duty elsewhere. The Marines ultimately fielded six full divisions of troops, all infantry, and all of which fought in the Pacific. There were also about 15 or so US Army Infantry divisions which fought in the Pacific. There would have been Marines “in Europe” during the war years attached to American embassies, just like today. And every major naval vessel had a detachment of Marines. Oftentimes on battleships the Marine detachment might be given one of the secondary gun mounts to crew in action, for competitive purposes.
