Were there any Verners/Varners in Colorado City before 1900?
So, far, the author of these web pages has only found one Verner that lived in Old Colorado City before 1900. R. J. Verner was elected to the Legislature of the State of Colorado in 1906, and served for two years, 1907-8 in Denver. His brief biography appears in a magazine named “Seeing Cripple Creek”, Vol VII, No. 5, Oct. 1906 (see the third page on the pdf, which is page 22 from the publication). This biography describes R. J. Verner as an “…old resident of Colorado Springs…”, which most probably means that he lived there prior to 1900. It also refers to his home being in “little London”, which strongly implies that he lived in the area of Colorado Springs that was known as Colorado City, and is now known as the area of Colorado Springs known as “Old Colorado City”. The meaning of the initials “R. J.” have not been found. A photo of R.J. Verner appears in the Colorado State Archives, where he is shown in a group photo with his colleagues in the Legislature.
