Were the Vikings the first Europeans to visit North America?
As several others have said, the Norse (aka “vikings”) were the first *recorded* Europeans to vist North America. The stories of their voyages are recorded in two documents called “Erick the Red’s Saga” and “The Saga of the Greelanders” However, RedUnicorn is slightly incorrect. Leif the Lucky (aka Leif Ericksson) was not the first Norseman to set foot on North America – he was the first to do so *intentionally*. The first one was a man named Bjarn who was blown off course in a storm. It was his report of lands farther west that inspired Leif to mount an expedition. Salkafar is also correct – there are theories that others maybe have travelled to North America in the distant past, but neither the Phonecians (who he named) nor the Egyptians (who he didn’t) are generally considered “European”, so I’m not sure it’s relevant specifically to your question.
