There’s a few big salaries on the Phillies payroll nowadays… Howard is on mega-money, Utley and Rollins command huge wages too. Given the resurgence in production that Rowand has gone through this past season, his value contract-wise is probably just one big salary too many for them to be able to afford in this context, especially when you consider that they really need to build up their pitching staff if they want to compete for World Series honours and that is where any spare money on their payroll should be targeted. Sure, they would like to have him around still I bet, but if they can acquire a strong starter with the money they have saved by not extending his contract then they will be a stronger team for letting him go.
