Yes, these are people with very “brittle” diabetes. By that, I mean that they cannot control their blood sugars despite optimal insulin therapies. They were measuring their blood glucose levels 10 to 15 times a day and injecting insulin three or four times a day or more. While trying their best, their bodies are just not reacting, and they are experiencing wide fluctuations. They also experience hypoglycemic unawareness, having lost that sensation of becoming low–and that situation is very scary. If driving or cooking, for example, they could basically black out as a result of their diabetes and not be aware of it.
