Were the KMT and the Communist Party of China ever one single party in the 20s?

They were never one single party, but they cooperated in the 1920s when both received the aid of the USSR to unify China and rid Western imperialism. It was during this time when Mao worked for the KMT, but he was a communist at heart and soon became disillusioned with the KMT. The KMT-CPC relationship got shaky after the death of Sun Yat-sen (the founder of the KMT, and idolized by both parties). When Chiang Kai-shek took power he allied with Germany, cut all ties with the USSR, split his KMT from the CPC and tried to eliminate the communists whilst unifying China under the KMT. During WWII, the KMT and CPC cooperated again, but the smaller CPC restricted themselves to guerilla warfare, leaving the KMT to fight the Japanese. After WWII, came the civil war, and we all know what happened. The CPC took the mainland and the KMT relocated to Taiwan. No armistice was signed, so technically they’re still at war.
