Were Sacco and Vanzetti Innocent?
Well arguments over guilt or innocence continues to this day. Technically, their convictions have never been overturned so in the eyes of the law they are guilty (though in 1977, the Governor of Massachusetts where the trial took place did say that he believed they had been treated “unjustly”). In the eyes of historians though the case remains unsolved. There evidence to suggest that Sacco at least was guilty. Ballistics tests at the time and twice again using modern techniques years later have proved that the bullet used in evidence was from his gun. But there have been several suggestions that there was a swap, the bullet it itself had scratches on that were inconsistent with the other bullets and it was the only one linked with Sacco’s gun despite the victim being shot four times. A policeman at the time also apparently told a reporter off the record that the guns had been switched.
