Were people from the middle ages stupid?
No, the dark ages were not peopled by stupid individuals. Some of the greatest thoughts and ideas came out of the middle ages, philosophically, sociologically and theologically speaking. It is true that some technological advances were lost, hypocaust and latrines for two, but the metal work and art of the era is fantastic (think Book of Kells and any Icelandic Saga you wish to mention, ). Of course all this knowledge was ‘lost’ only in the North part of Europe, the southern parts, ruled by the Moors, still had a continuous line of learning from the ancients onwards. What was lost technologically was gained socially. The status of women and those individuals who were old, infirm, or disabled was protected and freer under the dark age societies than under the Romans (who did not have time for anyone who was not a ‘Roman’ (i.e. citizen of, regardless of which country they actually came from) Man.
