Were Chimps Harmed During Hepatitis Studies? Thursday March 5, 2009 Last night’s episode of ABC’s Nightline featured the results of a 9-month investigation on the mistreatment of chimpanzees and monkeys at a laboratory that conducts drug tests and hepatitis studies. The laboratory, the New Iberia Research Center, is federally-funded and associated with the University of Louisiana at Lafayette. The investigation, organized by the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS), brought to light at least 338 potential violations of the Animal Welfare Act which outlines how lab animals must be treated.
