There were also instances of the western allies using captured German artillery in the fall of 1944 but this was due to the fact we had outrun our supply lines and ammunition was in short supply. German 105mm howitzers and the 88mm PAK 43 and FLAK 36/37 & 41 were the most commonly employed. But this lasted only a few weeks however. The Soviet’s did re-use up to several hundred captured STUG III’s and converted some captured Panzer III’s and IV’s to Su-76I assault guns. Panther’s and Tiger’s were also used, issued to elite crews as a “reward” and employed until the broke down (which was usually sooner, not later). But for the most part it really wasn’t necessary for the allies to use captured German equipment.
