Yes, alternative bypass pipe routes were considered. A shorter alternative route was considered from a headpond infront of Glanrafon but this would have required a pipe route below the Capel Seion Cemetery and a pipe route through the narrow passageway adjacent to No 40 Station Road. Before evaluating this scheme in any detail it was considered that the public relations and construction issues were unacceptable. In addition, with a headpond in this location the existing channel upstream to the railway aqueduct and beyond would need to be substantially reinforced (obtrusive wall raising) to accommodate the design discharge (1 in 100 year event). Other alternative pipe routes from the headpond at Cae’r Felin were considered but from here the railway is a major obstacle as there is insufficient headroom to pass the pipeline over it at any of the town road crossings and to go below would entail deep excavations and tunnelling.
