Backpacks can be no larger than 10″ X 17″ X 30 to be carried onto the bus, which is usually too small for those wishing to camp while visiting the island. Taxi service is available on island, but it can be expensive if you need to be transported from Lihue to Haena, or Lihue to Kokee. Currently and unfortunately, there is no other means of transportation for backpackers, unless they rent a vehicle. If campers rent a car, we advise them to leave nothing in the car and be sure to lock the vehicle. Practice the same safety precautions as you would at any other destination.
