Schoolwide Positive Behaviour Support is a framework that enables staff to apply PBS to a whole-school context. This allows for aspects of PBS traditionally applied to individual students, such as data collection and functional assessment, to be applied to any problem behaviour situation, including those involving large numbers of students. For example, in a primary school it was found from an examination of the data and staff discussion that the large number of playground incidents was due to the students fighting and arguing in order to access the games equipment . This resulted in many students being referred to the office for fighting, for misuse of school equipment, and for being in the playground after the final bell for classes had sounded. It was hypothesised (“guessed”) that the broad FUNCTION of the students’ behaviours was to access an event or activity (i.e., the games and equipment).
