We have an older female Maltese who gets stubborn and growls. Do old dogs essentially become cranky?
Here again we return to a recurring theme–Maltese are so much like people. Ask yourself this question: “Do old people become cranky?” I suppose most of us would answer that question with “Yes, in many cases they do.” LOL :o) However, that’s not to say that we can’t help alleviate some of that. In many cases, older dogs might have ailments that can cause discomfort and/or limitations, similar to those that afflict the elderly. For example, things like Arthritis, Rheumatism or just feeling weather changes “in their bones.” Also, deteriorating eyesight or hearing may cause the dog to behave differently. If your older dog gets stubborn or growls, it may be because they are experiencing pain or frustration. Be aware of this; be sensitive and comfort them, and give assistance when needed to help them overcome their limitations.
