We get calls from consumers who have been contacted by a Collections Agency and the collector refuses to reveal the identity of the creditor. What can the debtor do in this situation?
A. If would be difficult for a collector to collect payment of a debt from a debtor without advising who the creditor was. The debtor can certainly request the collector to identify themselves and if they don’t, the debtor may wish to call the BPCPA. If the debtor is able to provide the phone number for the collection agency or the agent’s name, we can search our data base to determine the name of the collection agency. We would then refer the debtor to ombudsman, or complaint contact, if necessary.
