Whether or not you claim your child as a dependent for tax purposes is irrelevant for financial aid purposes. The only way a student can be considered independent is to answer yes to at least one of the questions in step 3 of the FAFSA (see question 4). Note: If there are extreme or extenuating circumstances, a financial aid officer may elect to consider the student independent. It is, however, up to each individual financial aid office. The decision of the office is final and can not be appealed to the Department of Education.
