In the city of Chicago many organizations use off duty police officers to fill their need for specialized security and protective services. There has however been growing concern about this practice and for good reason. For many, the greatest reason is liability. Many people believe that the officers actions will be covered by the department he or she works for and in most cases this is not true. Unless that officer is working in an official police capacity their actions while employed off of duty are not covered by the department they work for. So where does the liability fall? Usually directly on the company employing the officer. Another reason is that police officers are prohibited from working off of duty in alcohol serving establishments. This means that if your principal is at a nightclub and a problem arises, the officer may be conflicted as to how to act. For both of these reasons there have been times where off duty police officers have disappeared during incidents.
