We are hiring an officer who currently works for another department in Minnesota. Do we have to pay for physical and psychological exams plus a background investigation?
According to Minnesota Rules, Chapter 6700.0700, a peace officer must have a comprehensive background (including fingerprints submitted to the BCA and FBI), a physical agility, psychological and physical examination prior to their initial appointment as a peace officer (certification required in Part II of the form: Request for Peace Officer License and Notification of Appointment.) Note: if a peace officer has been on inactive status for more than three years, they must complete all of the exams and an investigation over again (certification required in Part II of the form: Personnel Notification). As an employer, the hiring process provides you with an opportunity to make certain the candidate will be an asset to your agency and community.
