Water is a non renewable resource.why cant we desalinate more from oceans?

It takes a LOT of energy to boil water to desalinate it — more than the water is worth. Add to this the fact that most water-starved countries are VERY far from water sources, and the transportation of the water (de-salinated or fresh) is also prohibitively expensive. These two factors make it impractical.
