Was US President James Garfield ever Chief Justice of the Supreme Court?
Garfield was assassinated by Charles J. Guiteau, who was disgruntled over being unable to obtain a federal post. On July 2, 1881, Guiteau shot the new President twice: one bullet grazed his arm; the other lodged in his spine, and was unable to be located. Garfield succumbed to his injuries on September 19, 1881.
