By the time the first festival was held in 1947, farmers had already begun switching to other crops. For that first festival, the Dayton Lions Club wives prepared enough strawberry shortcake for 2,000 people. Few people, however, showed up for the dinner! strawberries_old_3 This year’s festival began in Dayton on May 2nd with the Ed Gentry Memorial Run/Walk. The final event, the Rhea County Junior Miss Program, takes place Saturday, May 23rd. In between those two events, plenty of activities are scheduled for the festival billed as a “celebration of small town life.” Tomorrow (5/12/09), the carnival opens. Though strawberries are no longer a major cash crop for county farmers, strawberries are still the stars of spring.
