L.A. Lakers fans riot outside the Staples Center L.A. Lakers fans celebrated their NBA championship victory Sunday night (June 14) by rioting outside the Staples Center in Los Angeles. Eyewitness reports said that the police officers at the scene were being belted with rocks and bottles. There are also reports of fans starting fires, although it isn’t clear at this stage whether those fires included buildings or vehicles. One unconfirmed report says that at least one police vehicle has been set on fire. Live footage at 9:15pm local time from a local television station clearly shows rioters attacking signs and shop fronts. Basketball fans riot on the streets of Los Angeles after Lakers win NBA title Hundreds of revellers caused havoc on the streets of Los Angeles last night after the Lakers won the NBA championship. Crowds gathered outside the Los Angeles’ Staples Center after the game with some fans damaging police cruisers, hurling fireworks, throwing rocks and bottles at officers and setting bonfires in the street. About 25 people were arrested, most part of a rowdy group that split off on to surrounding streets after police declared the gathering an unlawful assembly. Several police cruisers were damaged and reinforcement officers were called in from throughout the city to help disperse the crowd, according to police officer Karen Rayner. Aerial television footage showed people jumping on a police car, rocking vehicles attempting to pass through the crowd, setting small trees on fire and throwing fireworks and flares set up by police. More than 1,000 fans took to the streets outside the Staples Center in Los Angeles, California after the Lakers clinched the NBA Championship in Orlando, Florida against the Magic Sunday night. Though the game was not shown for fans in the arena itself, many fans squeezed into sports bars and restaurants in downtown Los Angeles to watch the deciding Game 5 of the NBA Finals. When fans took to the streets following the game, joyous celebrations quickly turned into violent riots.
