Was the transition from Entertainment Writer/Producer to Book Author easy or hard?
I retired from Hollywood some years ago. I miss the good days of working in television. I miss the friendships. You’re working with other writers in a writer’s room, you’re spending a lot of time with people, and I still have some great friendships from those days. Writing novels is a lonely process. Thankfully I have my wife, Carel. She’s a creative person and I talk with her a lot. Also my son Cole is a terrific professional writer. He’s a great help. Working in TV you get to be an adrenaline junkie. Television is hard to do, and such a big kick. When you’re trying to run a show, it’s so difficult, but it is a rush. And I do miss that. But, I do like novel writing. When you get to a certain stage you realize your life is not going to last forever and you want to leave something behind. Anything you write for the entertainment business is mediated by a huge machine. I like putting my energies into something that is not mediated, or changed by any of the processes of production.
