1. It was VERY important for commerce in seaport communities. Utilizing a telescope, traders with the devise were the first to gain knowledge of merchant ships approaching the port. This advanced knowledge allowed them an edge in what was basically a futures market. 2. The telescope was extremely useful to ship commanders themselves, helping them to identify landmarks useful in navigation and spot icebergs and other hazards in time for the slow-moving ships of the day to maneuver around them. 3. The telescope became crucial on the battlefield as the side with the telescope had an edge against an opponent without the devise, for obvious reasons. .
