Was the replacement of the Colt 1911 really necessary in 1985?
Folks, I just received a package of American Handgunner back issues. Therein are some contemporary articles about the 9mm pistol competition. I had been paying attention to the matter contemporaneously; these articles brought back memories of the whole sordid tale. I wish I had the time and energy to report on this in detail, but suffice it to say that the process was even more controversial than the recent USAF KC-135 replacement competition. In any case, the winner should have been the Ruger P-85, had it been submitted for the first round.
