The rave era had little or nothing to do with the hippie movement. They were completely different crowds with completely different motivations. The first time I heard of a “Rave” was when I was living in Hollywood in the late 80’s. Friends of mine from South Africa were telling me about these huge outdoor dance venues which were set up in the bush with generators and huge sound systems. Something which never really caught on here in America. By the time Raves hit the Los Angeles area, they started out mostly in abandoned buildings in the down town areas. Sometimes they were in parking structures, or warehouses. Early on is was not uncommon just to break into a building, set up for the night, have the Rave and bail without every getting permission. In the begining, Raves were just an extension of the 80’s dance scene. Once the drug Exticy hit the scene it started to change dramatically though.
