Celibacy was imposed on Catholic priests only since the Middle Ages. Before that, married men were ordained to the priesthood, even to the papacy, but none of the 254 popes married after receiving the Holy Orders. St. Peter, the first pope, Peter Cephas, St. Hormisdas (married and widowed before ordination) father of Pope St. Silverius, Adrian II and many others (about 30) were among the married popes.
