In Germany there had been a powerful anti smoking campaign since the early 1900s.Adolf Hitler had been a heavy smoker all his life and smoked up to 40 per day,but he stopped and became an anti smoker.The national socialists through legislation made it illegal to smoke in public places such as cinema’s and opera houses.They also banned smoking on public transport such as trams,buses and trains.It was very hard law to enforce the law because so many people in Germany at that time were smokers.In the armed forces smoking started to decline and the government restricted cigarette issues to service personnel.The Nazi’s also believed that women who were pregnant stood more chance of having a still birth than those women who did not smoke.They also said that nicotine got into the breast milk of pregnant women which then was digested by the new born baby.They may have had a good point by saying this, but it did not stop people smoking so you could say that their anti smoking campaign was not a
