Even though we call ourselves a career services office, there are still a handful of students who expect us to hand them a job. In talking with my peers at other B-schools, I’ve found that they’ve had that problem as well. I don’t know where these expectations are founded, but they’re there. What, according to your philosophy, is the most effective way to place graduates? Here’s a few of the things I talk to our students about: Take control of your own job search. Do a complete self-assessment before getting started. Know what you want to do and why. Develop a strategic plan. Use every resource available to you (that includes the career services office, faculty, alumni, and network contacts). Overprepare for the interview. Become an outstanding interviewer. And lastly, enjoy the process; students will never have the opportunity for the rest of their lives to do this kind of interviewing with this many companies.
