Thousands of police cars join memorial procession for slain Lakewood officers KOMO-TV STAFF AND NEWS SERVICES LAKEWOOD — Thousands of officers from across the country took part in a miles-long tribute to four slain Lakewood police officers. Firefighters and fellow law enforcement officers met at McChord Air Force Base for a three-hour procession (see route map) Tuesday morning and began to make their way to the Tacoma Dome at 10 a.m. Video from AIR 4 hovering over the staging area showed thousands of police and fire vehicles with sirens flashing lined up roughly 30 rows deep and a quarter mile long, waiting their turn to join the procession. Vehicles then began to leave in single file, each passing under a large American flag held by two fire department ladder trucks. Even as emergency vehicles continue to set off for a 10-mile procession through the Tacoma-area, headed to the Tacoma Dome to honor four Lakewood, Washington police officers killed last Sunday in the line of duty, officers and relatives are filing into the dome for a memorial service. The memorial, originally planned for 1 p.m., has been delayed until 1:45 p.m. to accommodate families of the officers and some of the 20,000 uniformed officers enroute to attend. Live coverage showed an awesome display of hundreds of Royal Canadian Mounted Police officers marching in regiments– and dressed in bright red uniforms — into the coliseum. Officials believe it is the largest memorial crowd the state has ever seen: more than 20,000 law enforcement mourners from the Pacific Northwest and as far away as New York and Florida.
