Was the internet developed as a response to the fall of communism?

The Internet grew out of DARPA net which was put together in 1979 as a military communications network. The WWW was created “on top of” DARPA by Tim Berners Lee when he was at CERN as a way for scientists to access files on each other’s computers. He kept a low profile and missed out on widespread acknowledgement though because he was afraid of the Unibomber. Contrary to those who spread misinformation, Al Gore never said he invented the internet. In the interview that that deliberate falsification is fabricated from, he never makes such a ludicrous statement. He was an advocate of the use of the internet as a way for people to become more informed. Unfortunately for his political career, publicizing whatever puts eyeballs in front of the commercials is more important than correctly informing the voting public.
