Was the Hindu Goddess Kali good or evil?
In the west we tend to separate the female archetype into 2 main categories; the nurturing female/mother/virgin & the destructive feminine. the reality is the feminine psyche and nature is far more complex. In India the goddess forms encompass more of the complexities of the female purpose. Kali is a fine example of this. She represents the power of both the creative and destructive principles of nature. This does not relate to good and evil in the Christian sense. It is a larger force which acknowledges the fuller function and power of the sexuality of the feminine productive essense. Although larger than life, the imagery of Kali recognises the life/death & rebirth aspects of nature and all the violence and theatre it incurs. To a degree she is a more truthful icon than the demure or demonic perceptions in Christian myth.
