Was the Guard involved post September eleven airport security?
Lempke: Very much so. Throughout the nation there were like 8,000 soldiers that were deployed. Here in Nebraska, we had to cover ten airports if you can believe that. We had ten, in addition to Lincoln and Omaha, eight other airports throughout the state that provide some sort of commercial service at various times. So for about nine months we performed that mission and I think did a great job. We received a lot of kudos from the public and the government for the work that we did. SNN: How are your recruitment efforts these days? Lempke: Well, recruitment has been going pretty good. It has primarily been the result of some hard work by folks. After September eleven we got phone calls and higher interest, but it is not easy getting into the Armed Forces these days. The requirements are quite high and so I would say that the number we are able to take from additional interest really didnt change much from what we were able to take from before.
