1 The Transport Manager confirmed that wherever possible the Council did investigate alternative ways in which to provide school transport including the staggering of school times. However, that option was more suited to the urban areas, as opposed to the rural areas of the county where large distances had to be covered to transport children to school. Additionally, the Council regularly reviewed the school routes to maximise the use of transport. Such action was particularly relevant after the commencement of the autumn term in the colleges within the county, as the department was not made aware of the take up on college routes until mid-late august following the release of examination results. ยท National legislation stipulated that free school transport would be provided for all children aged 8, and over, who lived three miles, and over, from their designated catchment school, with those living within the three miles having to make their own arrangements to and from school.
