Trying to put some sence to this mess, the Austrian Empire expanded in this region. They granted Hungary an equal share of power in the Empire (thus becoming known to us as the Austro-Hungarian Empire). Austria was able to settle things for a while, but the strain was too great. Eventually the pre-WWI Balkan tensions generated general war, dragging Germany, Russia, France, Britain, Russia and eventually even the USA into the conflict of WWI. The already strained Austro-Hungarian Empire collapsed due to the war and has never been put back together.
